Steve Jobs the Untouchable? He Drove His Mercedes Without Plates

October 10, 2011 12:33 PM EDT
Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) late co-founder Steve Jobs was so untouchable that he drove his car around town without license plates.

The LA Times reported that for years Jobs drove his silver 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AM without plates in complete violation of state law for security reasons. He did this without paying any plate-related fines.

Jobs was only driving the car about 5,500 miles per year, so this could explain why he was never caught.

But (as pointed out in the article) if you're driving around a car with no plates wouldn't that draw more attention?

"The best way to remain anonymous would be to keep the plates on. And this, in the end, is the great paradox of the mystery. Not displaying plates made Steve Jobs' car just as conspicuous and identifiable as a man who, say, always wore jeans, a black turtleneck and New Balance sneakers."
