Microsoft (MSFT) Gets Another Big-Time Windows 8 App in Facebook (FB)

June 26, 2013 2:48 PM UTC
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced having 100,000 apps for Windows 8, which is an unusual announcement given that apps for operating systems used to be called "programs" or "software."

That might seem like a pithy number, but Microsoft has been striving for quality over quantity when it comes to allowing apps on its operating system. Many have been deemed "beautiful" by various tech blogs. And guess who is going to join the party?

With its Build 2013 keynote today, Microsoft announced that an official Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) app would join the lineup soon. Facebook will also be building its own "offical" app in-house, versus letting platform owners build their own version of the app.

It's a big step forward for Microsoft given recent scrutiny the company has come under following the launch of Windows 8. The Windows 8.1 upgrade promises to make the operating system more user friendly, while still having key features that will be enhanced via a tablet experience.

Other upcoming apps include Flipboard and and NFL Fantasy Football app.

Shares of Microsoft are up over 2 percent Wednesday.
