Microsoft (MSFT) Cuts Surface RT Prices 30%+ as Sales Still Non-Existent

July 15, 2013 7:11 AM EDT
Following reports last week that Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is cutting prices of its Surface RT tablet, more news is out today on the move.

The WSJ notes that prices on the lineup have been trimmed by up to 30 percent as Microsoft looks to keep up with tablet offerings from peers like Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), and others.

The least-expensive Surface RT now runs $349 sans keyboard, from a prior price of $499. Other models are seeing similar price cuts. Microsoft calls the cuts as getting "a great tablet, now at an even better price."

Microsoft's action relates to lagging sales for its first-ever computer, which saw just 900,000 units ship in the first two quarters of availability. Given the broad management adjustments announced last week by CEO Steve Ballmer, its clear that Microsoft is refocusing on becoming a leader in hardware as well as software.
