Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) might be taking a page from Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) playbook with this one.

According to TheVerge, Microsoft is considering he idea of making Windows Phone OS and Windows RT OS free for device OEMs. That would be a significant step in the right direction if Microsoft was planning to get more of the mobile operating systems into more hands.

Currently, Microsoft charges OEMs about $10 to $15 for each Windows Phone OS license and $35 to $50 for a Windows RT OS license.

Along with Android, Microsoft has to worry about other mobile operating systems like Chrome OS and Samsung's Tizen.

Microsoft might try to make up the deficit by selling more subscription services (Office, Skype), while also garnering another revenue opportunity on advertisements as more users utilize Bing.

With Microsoft looking to complete its purchase of Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) Devices & Services unit within Q114 and CEO succession imminent, there might be no better time for the company to make a move on this.

Shares of Microsoft are down about 1.4 percent.
