Remember all those amazing Windows-based smartphones that changed the mobile industry? Don't feel bad. Nobody does.
Microsoft Corp. (NYSE: MSFT) was more than late to the party for the smartphone revolution, only now making headway with its Windows Phone 7. Now the company has taken a long-term development approach with the tablet market.
CEO Steve Ballmer was lambasted for not looking to the future in his keynote speech at last weeks Consumer Electronics Show and instead focusing on the relative success of the company's Kinect gaming accessory and its PC operating system.
Ballmer did finally talk about bringing the company's golden goose to tablets, but there won't likely be a true Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) rival from Microsoft until sometime in 2012. This after he took the stage one year ago pushing tablets. It seems the iPad and other devices have caused Microsoft to rethink its strategy.
Microsoft is planning to release tablets with full Windows 7 operating system capabilities sometime down the road, which holds one major downfall. Windows operating systems tend to run more processes, thus slowing down performance and draining batteries. Both major hindrances.
The longer Microsoft wait to joint the fray the bigger lead Apple will have, and Windows will likely need to take a seat behind Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android.
