Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Google is planning to launch a ridesharing service, utilizing technology from Waze.
The WSJ noted the speculation on Tuesday.
Google began a pilot program last May, allowing a few thousand workers at firms around the company's HQ to connect with other commuters for transport to and from work. The company is planning to launch the service to the broader San Francisco area starting this autumn.
Waze's aim is to connect riders to drivers that are already heading in the same direction, versus the taxi-like service offered by Uber and Lyft. The company also wants to keep fares low enough that people wouldn't want to act like taxi drivers.
