General Motors (GM) May Consider Eliminating Brands

The Detroit Free Press has learned that General Motors (NYSE: GM) is considering the possible elimination of some of its brands, including the Pontiac, Hummer and Saab brands. In addition, Bloomberg reported it included the Saturn brand.
The source told the Detroit Free Press that all options are on the table as executives are looking at potential savings as it assembles a plan that GM can submit to Congress in GM's effort to get a government loan to help it out while it suffers this cash crisis.
GM would likely be able to cut costs by paring down its extensive brand portfolio, as it died with Oldsmobile in 2000.
GM, Chrysler LLC and Ford Motor (NYSE: F) are preparing to submit a new bid to Congress next week in an effort to get a $25 billion bridge loan.
