GM (Nasdaq: GM) led the ranking in J.D. Power's quality survey for the first time since the survey began 30 years ago. Eight GM vehicles led their respective categories. GM's quality is viewed as essentially identical to Toyota (NYSE: TM), said J.D. Power's David Sargent.
"GM's always been good at improving a vehicle once it's come to market," Sargent said told reporters. "What they're also showing to be pretty good at now is launching vehicles with pretty good quality too."
Prosche took the top spot among brands, followed by GMC, Toyota, Lexus, and Chevrolet. Among non-luxury brands, GMC and Chevrolet ranked the highest.
The survey measures problems per 100 vehicles.
