If there was any doubt that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is producing a smart watch, today's news might put that all to rest.

The WSJ today said that Apple filed an application in Japan to trademark "iWatch." The filing was made on June 3rd and made public on the 27th.

Apple's "iWatch" application will go through a thorough review before approval.

CEO Tim Cook hinted at a wearable computing device during an AllThingsD conference last May, saying that the wrist was a "natural" place for the device.

Shares of Apple are higher in early trading.
