Amazon.com (AMZN) Registers for Ocean Trasnport License

January 15, 2016 9:18 AM UTC

Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) has worked to control logistics on the land and in the air, now the e-commerce giant might be aiming to control the high seas.

According to the WSJ, Amazon has registered itself with the Federal Maritime Commission (the Federal agency which oversees ocean transport), which is a step forward for the company to serve as an intermediary for suppliers looking to ship wares in or out of the U.S.

Amazon's registration is under its subsidiary, Beijing Century Joyo Courier Service Co. The filing was made last November.

News comes as Amazon works to improve drone technology and expand its ground transport fleet. The company is also likely to eventually start working with Blue Origin, a company co-founded by CEO Jeff Bezos, which recently launched and safely landed the same rocket. That could pave the way for tremendously-quick international shipments.

Shares of Amazon are indicated lower Friday.
