Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) is active Monday following disclosure that more users are paying with mobile.
The WSJ noted that Alipay, the mobile payment platform affiliated with Alibaba, had 54 percent of all transactions in the first 10 months of 2014 coming through mobile. That compares with 22 percent for all of 2013.
Alipay was launched in 2004 and boasts over 300 million registered users. The company not only processes payments for Alibaba's Taobao and Tmall, but also lets users handle other types of payments, such as utility bills, taxi rides, and more.
Mobile payment demand is also strong in rural areas, where desktop PCs are less prominent.
Shares of Alibaba are down 1.3 percent early.
