According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs is ready to come back to work later this month after his long medical leave.

It is even possible that Jobs could make his reappearance at Apple's annual software developers' conference next week in San Francisco and unveil a new iPhone.

In June, after mounting speculation about his health and denials from the company, Jobs surprised investors by announcing that he would take a medical leave until June. Jobs said his health-related issues were more complex than he originally thought.

The Journal said, in his absence, some Apple directors have gotten weekly updates about his medical condition from the CEO's physician.

On person told the Journal, Mr. Jobs' recovery "is coming along" and he is on schedule to return to work later this month, said this person, who has seen Mr. Jobs in recent weeks. "He was one real sick guy,'' added this person. "Fundamentally he was starving to death over a nine-month period. He couldn't digest protein. [But] he took corrective action.''
