Jay Lefkowitz: Professional Background and Retirement in 2026
Jay P. Lefkowitz is an American attorney, author and former senior partner at Kirkland & Ellis. Over a legal career spanning more than three decades, he worked on complex litigation, appellate cases and matters involving federal regulation. His career has also included senior government positions, academic teaching and involvement in public policy.
Legal Career
Lefkowitz spent more than 30 years at Kirkland & Ellis, where he became a senior partner and served on the firm's Worldwide Management Committee. His practice covered a range of complex legal matters, including antitrust, securities, product liability, pharmaceutical regulation and intellectual property.
His appellate work included cases before the United States Supreme Court, such as PLIVA v. Mensing (2011) and Mutual Pharmaceutical Co. v. Bartlett (2013).
Government and Public Service
Alongside his private legal practice, Lefkowitz held several positions in the United States government. During the administration of President George H. W. Bush, he served as Director of Cabinet Affairs and Deputy Executive Secretary to the Domestic Policy Council.
Under President George W. Bush, he served as General Counsel of the Office of Management and Budget and Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. From 2005 to 2009, he also served as the first U.S. Special Envoy for Human Rights in North Korea.
These roles gave him experience across legal practice, executive government and international human rights policy.
Education and Academic Work
Lefkowitz graduated from Columbia College in 1984 with a degree in history and received his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 1987.
He has maintained an academic connection with Columbia Law School, where he taught a seminar on Supreme Court advocacy. His teaching has drawn on his experience in appellate litigation and the workings of the American judicial system.
He has also written for publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Commentary, addressing legal issues, public policy and current affairs.
Retirement in 2026
In 2026, Lefkowitz retired from Kirkland & Ellis, concluding a tenure of more than three decades at the firm. His departure marked a new phase following a career that combined private legal practice with government service and academic work.
