Lorka AI's State of AI 2026 report finds average AI user relies on two tools, as ChatGPT's share of U.S. chatbot usage declines amid gains from Copilot, Gemini, and Claude

New York, United States-- New survey data indicates that a majority of American AI users now regularly use more than one AI tool, marking a shift away from single-platform reliance that characterized the early years of consumer AI adoption, according to recent report by Lorka AI, a survey of 1,000 US adults fielded with OnePoll in early June.

Among respondents who use AI regularly or occasionally, the average reported number of AI tools used was 2.0. Of surveyed AI users, 32% reported using one tool, 42% reported using two tools, and 22% reported using three or more tools.

Market Share Data Shows Shifting Usage Patterns

The Lorka report cites Statcounter market-share data showing ChatGPT leading U.S. AI chatbot usage at 66%, down from 76% a year earlier. According to the same data, Microsoft Copilot accounts for 11% of usage, Google Gemini accounts for 10%, Anthropic's Claude has risen to nearly 7%, Perplexity holds 5%, and DeepSeek has reached an early 1% share. The report notes that this data measures chatbot usage specifically, rather than the full AI market.

Findings Align With Independent Industry Data

Independent industry data reflects a similar direction, though figures vary by measurement method. Sensor Tower's own State of AI 2026 report, covered by Fast Company, found that ChatGPT's share of the global AI assistant market dropped below 50% for the first time this spring, even as its total user base continued to grow. According to that coverage, Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude were the biggest beneficiaries of that shift.

Factors Contributing to Multi-Tool Use

The Lorka report identifies several factors associated with the trend toward using multiple AI tools. Data from the survey shows 56% of AI users rely entirely on no-cost tiers, which the report notes lowers the barrier to trying additional tools.

The survey also found that AI use spans a range of categories, including research and learning, writing and editing, health and wellness questions, creative projects, and casual conversation. Additionally, the same survey found that accuracy and reliability rank as the most important factor Americans weigh when choosing an AI tool, ahead of price or brand loyalty.

Industry Context

Analysts covering the AI industry have noted that as Gemini and Claude have grown their usage share throughout 2026, OpenAI has responded with new features, pricing changes, and product updates.
