Investing.com -- UBS has released its rankings of top copper stocks, highlighting five mining companies as leading investment opportunities in the sector while noting the inherent risks that come with commodity exposure.

The investment bank emphasized that all companies in the mining sector face potential risks, including volatile commodity prices and currency fluctuations, which may differ materially from expectations. The sector is also exposed to political, financial, and operational risks that have the potential to significantly impact company and industry performance.

1. Anglo American tops the UBS rankings. The investment bank's price target for Anglo is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation methodology.

2. Teck Resources Ltd ranks second on the UBS list. The price target for Teck is based on a 12-month forward EV/EBITDA valuation approach.

3. First Quantum Minerals Ltd comes in third. UBS notes a key company-specific risk is the outcome for First Quantum's interest in Cobre Panama, where the company has invested approximately $10 billion to date. The bank also identifies various outcomes for First Quantum to manage liquidity risks while the mine is non-operational through cuts to capital expenditures and potential asset sales. The UBS price target is based on 7x EV/EBITDA on 2028 estimates.

4. Freeport-McMoRan ranks fourth. UBS derives its price target from an EBITDA multiple valuation.

5. Hudbay Minerals Inc rounds out the top five. The price target is derived from an EBITDA multiple. UBS points to additional company-specific risks for Hudbay, including delivery upon various growth projects across its global footprint. The investment case is also linked to Copper World, which UBS describes as a material project with financing, delivery, and other risks.

All five companies face exposure to commodity price volatility and operational challenges inherent to the mining industry, according to UBS.
