Morgan Stanley refreshes Strait of Hormuz reopening analysis

September 23, 2026 6:42 AM EDT

Investing.com -- Morgan Stanley updated its analysis of European sector and stock sensitivities to a potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, following increased signs of US-Iran diplomatic engagement and expectations for an earlier operational restart of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline.

US and Iranian negotiators held lengthy talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. President Trump participated in a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting, and Iranian President Pezeshkian arrived in New York late Tuesday, according to CBS.

The bank identified 50 stocks most positively correlated to a potential Strait of Hormuz reopening. Airlines, aerospace, construction and materials, apparel retail, luxury goods, and banks showed the highest tactical sensitivity to any resolution.

Morgan Stanley maintains overweight ratings on banks, semiconductors, and capital goods, citing greater durability in performance and more attractive risk-reward profiles. The firm noted that banks typically deliver sustained outperformance following oil price peaks during geopolitical escalation periods.

Most of the Strait of Hormuz impact has occurred among disruption beneficiaries, the bank said. The ratio of top versus bottom reopening-exposed stocks has erased over half of gains following the original US-Iran ceasefire.

European equities showed the highest sensitivity to reopening among major global indices, largely from a sentiment perspective. Morgan Stanley's bottom-up analysis indicates corporate resilience and earnings gains in higher energy price environments.

Among European countries, France's CAC 40 index displayed the strongest positive correlation to any resolution, driven by OAT spread focus and high luxury goods weighting.
