Disney's (NYSE: DIS) 'Lone Ranger' will likely be handed defeat over the holiday weekend by Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) / Universal Pictures' 'Despicable Me 2', according to early data.
On Wednesday 'Despicable Me 2' took in $35 million and it took in another $24.5 million on Thursday, for a total of $59.5 million. This number is expected to double over the 5-day opening.
Meanwhile, Lone Ranger took in only $9.7 million Wednesday and it is projected to taking in $60 to $70 million over the weekend. Considering the film's $250 million budget, it is being viewed as a disappointment
