FAA pauses some LaGuardia-bound flights as wildfire smoke impairs visibility

Invesitng.com -- The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily halted some flights Wednesday that were bound for New York’s LaGuardia Airport as smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires darkened skies across the region.

The FAA said the halted flights were set to fly from the East Coast and upper Midwest to LaGuardia until at least 2:15pm ET. The probability of extension is medium, or about 30 to 60%, it added.

Low visibility was also causing delays at Newark Liberty International Airport and San Francisco International Airport, the aviation agency said.

Wildfires spreading through Canada drifted southward across multiple cities across the East Coast including New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, prompting several air quality alerts.

Airlines stocks including Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE: LUV), Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE: DAL) and United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: UAL) gave up some gains.
