CoreCivic shares slip following unexpected CEO transition

September 25, 2026 9:48 AM EDT

Investing.com -- CoreCivic Inc (NYSE: CXW) shares fell 3.3% in early Friday trading following the announcement of a sudden executive leadership transition.

The private prison and government solutions operator announced that Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Lucibeth N. Mayberry has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Mayberry replaces Patrick D. Swindle, who resigned from his role as CEO and board member to pursue treatment for stage four metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Swindle, who had served as CEO since January 1, 2026, will continue to support the organization as a special advisor during the executive handoff. Board Chair Mark Emkes highlighted Swindle's efforts in fortifying the company's balance sheet, noting that Mayberry brings extensive operational depth and the full backing of the board to lead the next phase of growth.

Mayberry brings more than two decades of tenure at CoreCivic, having previously held senior leadership roles overseeing real estate, strategy, and corporate development. In her initial statement, she reiterated her commitment to maintaining the company’s ongoing capital allocation strategy and operational priorities.

Despite the continuity offered by an insider appointment, investors reacted cautiously to the unexpected departure of Swindle, who had recently led significant strategic initiatives including property divestitures earlier this year. Shares reflected broader market sensitivity to governance shifts as the company balances operational stability with its longer-term strategic roadmap.
