Investing.com -- Connect Biopharma Holdings Ltd ADR (NASDAQ: CNTB) shares jumped 25% Wednesday after the company reported positive Phase 2 trial results for rademikibart, its drug candidate for treating acute exacerbations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.
The Seabreeze STAT COPD study showed rademikibart significantly reduced the rate of treatment failure by 81% through one month compared to placebo. The drug also reduced new moderate to severe COPD exacerbations by 85% and eliminated hospitalizations or emergency department visits for new acute COPD exacerbations by 100% during the same period.
The Phase 2 study enrolled 159 participants globally with an eosinophil count of at least 300 cells/μL who experienced an acute COPD exacerbation. Participants received either a single dose of rademikibart or placebo, administered subcutaneously in addition to standard care.
Rademikibart is a fully human monoclonal antibody targeting interleukin-4 receptor alpha, designed to block the functions of IL-4 and IL-13 to treat inflammatory diseases. The drug was well tolerated with a lower incidence of adverse events compared to placebo, and no new safety signals were observed.
Connect Biopharma plans to engage with the FDA to gain alignment on a Phase 3 program for rademikibart as an add-on treatment for COPD. The company has granted an exclusive license to Simcere Pharmaceutical for rademikibart in Greater China and is eligible to receive milestone payments up to approximately $99 million.
The San Diego-based clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company is focused on developing treatments for inflammatory diseases, including asthma and COPD.
