Cellular Networks Need to Jump to 4G Now

Cellular signals are going to be showing up is some different place in the near future according to the show floor at CES 2010 is any indication.

Cellular capabilities are spring up in netbooks, e-readers, MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) and smartbooks as everything is coming together in the technology world.

In the coming years consumer electronic devices with embedded wireless will become a common sight as even products such as digital picture frames will receive a wireless signal.

“In 2010, we’ll see more devices (that have embedded cellular), but it won’t until we have national 4G networks,” NPD Group industry analyst director, Ross Rubin said.

The past year has seen massive scrutiny of the capabilities of 3G connectivity as more and more devices become capable of connecting to networks from anywhere.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) has received the brunt of the criticism recently as its network has been taken to task for not allowing cellular users, especially those with an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone, to have reliable service.

In Las Vegas, where CES is taking center stage this weekend, Clearwire has a 4G WiMax network up and running that allows for smooth use of cellular connected devices. However this WiMax technology is a long way from taking a national foothold as companies continue to pump out more and more connectable products.

Consumers will need to receive a better price plan for these devices as they continuously need contracts for service. Some customers may turn to devices that offer Wi-Fi instead for the cost-effectiveness. Wi-Fi requires network configuration to connect wirelessly.

“Consumers like the flexibility of purchasing on-the-go,” Rubin added.

Some products will counteract this choice by adding cellular and Wi-Fi capabilities into devices including the foreseen wave of new e-readers that are set to hit the market.
