As demonstrated by Tuesday morning's nat-gas development deal between Westport (NASDAQ: WPRT) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT), the substantial price difference between natural gas and diesel fuel is creating strong financial incentives for players to make the switch. Nat gas is now frequently billed as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to traditional fuels in the U.S, a trend which has caused demand to surge.
Increased production has pushed natural gas prices to ten-year lows and caused widespread disruptions in energy markets -- at the expense of other forms of energy. The price of natural gas futures stabilized has in recent weeks. The US Natural Gas Fund (NYSE: UNG) is up 3 percent in the past month.
