OpenAI to acquire cloud infrastructure company Ona
OpenAI announced it will acquire Ona, a cloud execution and orchestration technology company, to expand its Codex ecosystem with secure infrastructure for long-running AI agents.
The acquisition aims to enable Codex agents to operate in persistent cloud environments beyond single device sessions. OpenAI reports more than 5 million people use Codex weekly, representing a 400% increase from earlier this year.
Ona has supported 2 million developers working in secure cloud environments and provides customer-controlled execution models. The company's technology allows organizations to maintain control over infrastructure, data, and security boundaries while accessing OpenAI's AI capabilities.
"Agents need more than intelligence; they need a trusted workspace," said Johannes Landgraf, Co-Founder and CEO of Ona. "Joining OpenAI lets us bring that foundation into Codex, helping organizations deploy agents with confidence."
The technology addresses enterprise requirements for agents operating across production workflows over extended periods. Organizations can specify where agents run, what they access, how credentials are managed, and how activities are logged.
Thibault Sottiaux, Core Products Lead at OpenAI, stated that Ona will help make Codex easier to deploy securely across production workflows for customers with high security standards.
The acquisition remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Until closing, both companies will operate independently. Following completion, the Ona team will join OpenAI to work with the Codex team on enterprise execution capabilities.
OpenAI indicated the combined technology will support engineering teams in sustained work across software development lifecycles, including testing, issue resolution, application modernization, and vulnerability management.
