AngioDynamics funds Jacobi Hospital PE imaging research

AngioDynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ: ANGO) and The PERT Consortium® have selected Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, New York, as a recipient of an ALPHA-PE Research Fund award, according to a press release from the company.

The award will fund an independent, investigator-led study by Dr. Jonathan Alis, Dr. Seth I. Sokol and their team. The study will evaluate CT pulmonary angiography radiomics as predictors of thrombus biology, thrombectomy success and long-term outcomes in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE).

The research will assess imaging biomarkers that may reflect clot composition and predict how a patient's clot responds to mechanical thrombectomy. Physicians currently have limited ability to use CT pulmonary angiography to assess thrombus biology or predict thrombectomy outcomes.

"CT pulmonary angiography is already central to the diagnosis and assessment of pulmonary embolism, but there is potentially much more information within those images than we are using today," said Dr. Sokol. "Our goal is to determine whether radiomic features can help us better understand the biology of a patient's clot and predict how it will respond to mechanical thrombectomy."

The ALPHA-PE Research Fund was established by AngioDynamics in partnership with The PERT Consortium® to support physician-led research on PE care. The program provides awards ranging from $50,000 to $750,000 over one to three years for studies focused on patient outcomes, workflow optimization and novel therapeutic approaches.

Amir Darki, MD, Co-Chair of the National PERT Research Consortium, said the study "addresses an important clinical question and has the potential to provide insights that are meaningful to physicians, patients and the broader PE community."
