Crews focus on restoring outages after multiple rounds of severe weather moved across northern Illinois
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- ComEd crews continue to make progress restoring power to customers after a triple punch of severe storms swept across northern Illinois on Thursday night and Friday afternoon. The most severely impacted areas were the north and south regions of ComEd’s territory including Tinley Park, Burbank, Homewood and some southern wards in the City among the hardest hit areas. The storms brought heavy rain, frequent lightning and wind gusts over 50 miles per hour, causing extensive tree damage across several communities. Since the storms began, more than 200,000 customers have been restored, and approximately 52,000 customers remain without power. ComEd estimates that 80 percent of customers will be restored the evening of July 4, with remaining customers restored by Sunday evening.
Additional severe weather is possible through the holiday weekend, with potential storms on Saturday afternoon. More than 1,300 full-time ComEd and contractor personnel are positioned across the system to assist in restoration. Crews will continue to work around the clock until all customers are restored.
“We saw several fast-moving storm cells roll across our service territory, causing significant tree damage and outages,” said David Perez, executive vice president and COO of ComEd. “Our crews are out in force and will continue working safely through the holiday weekend to get every customer restored as quickly as possible.”
Public safety is paramount, and ComEd encourages customers to take the following precautions:
- If a downed power line is spotted, please immediately call ComEd at 1-800-EDISON1 (1-800-334-7661). Spanish-speaking customers should call 1-800-95-LUCES (1-800-955-8237).
- Never approach a downed power line. Always assume a power line is energized and extremely dangerous.
- In the event of an outage, do not approach ComEd crews working to restore power to ask about restoration times. Crews may be working on live electrical equipment, and the perimeter of the work zone may be hazardous.
