BitRipple enables continuous, real-time connectivity across satellite and cellular networks for flight-critical telemetry and monitoring in advanced air mobility

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BitRipple (www.bitripple.com) today announced that Joby Aviation has deployed BitRipple’s LT3 adaptive transport platform as a mission-critical communications layer across its flight test operations. Joby is flight testing its first FAA-conforming aircraft for Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) testing required to validate the aircraft for commercial service. These flights demonstrate the reliability of the aircraft and the maturity of its operational capabilities and validate the aircraft’s performance envelope, including range, speed and energy management under real-world conditions. This testing requires the streaming of reliable real-time telemetry data from the aircraft.

To help meet this requirement, Joby uses BitRipple’s LT3 platform to provide resilient, software-defined communications across both satellite and terrestrial cellular networks. LT3 operates across multiple active links simultaneously and adapts in real time to changing network conditions, including in-flight transitions, satellite handoffs, fluctuating bandwidth, and partial or degraded link availability.

BitRipple’s technology has been tested across Joby’s flight program over a year of flight operations and supports flight-critical telemetry and monitoring, ensuring continuity in environments where reliable communications links are critical. LT3 is integrated into Joby’s flight test communications stack and operates continuously during flight.

“Ensuring reliable, real-time telemetry and monitoring during our flight operations requires a highly resilient communications architecture,” said Kevin Carosso, Data Engineering Lead at Joby Aviation. “BitRipple's software-based approach allows our teams to maintain continuous connectivity across satellite and cellular networks throughout our flight test program, providing a dependable stream of engineering data without adding hardware complexity.”

Unlike conventional networking approaches that rely on single-link performance or static failover models, BitRipple’s LT3 platform is purpose-built for highly dynamic environments such as airborne operations. By orchestrating traffic across multiple active links simultaneously, LT3 maintains continuity through impairments, outages, and handoffs, without requiring additional spectrum, specialized hardware, or weight-intensive antenna systems.

This software-defined approach enables capabilities that would otherwise require significant investment in dedicated spectrum, custom hardware, or complex airborne communications systems.

“Aircraft operations demand communications that do not fail when conditions change, because in aviation, it seems conditions are always changing,” said Scott Brown, CEO of BitRipple. “Joby is setting the standard for next-generation aviation, and that includes adopting a communications architecture designed for resilience from the ground up. We are proud to support their flight operations with continuous, adaptive connectivity across satcom and cellular networks.”

Through this deployment, Joby and BitRipple are demonstrating a communications architecture that:

  • operates across satellite and terrestrial networks simultaneously,
  • adapts in real-time to changing link conditions,
  • maintains continuity for mission-critical data through in-flight disruptions,
  • removes dependence on any single communications path, and
  • supports the safety and reliability requirements of next-generation aviation systems.

Joby has flown more than 50,000 miles across its test fleet and continues to advance toward FAA certification and initial U.S. operations. The companies believe resilient, software-defined communications will be a critical enabler of dependable and scalable advanced air mobility services.
