TMC the metals company Inc. (Nasdaq: TMC) announced the appointment of Liam Mallon, former President of ExxonMobil Upstream Company, to its board of directors, according to a company statement dated Sept. 29, 2026.
Mallon spent 35 years with Mobil and ExxonMobil before retiring in 2025. As President of ExxonMobil Upstream Company and Vice President of ExxonMobil Corporation, he oversaw $20–$30 billion in annual capital deployment and played a role in major projects, including ExxonMobil's Guyana development and the $60 billion acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources. He will chair TMC's Sustainability and Innovation Committee.
Mallon said in the statement: "I have spent much of my career developing complex and unconventional resources in challenging environments on land and at sea, and building the organizations to operate them safely and reliably at scale."
TMC Chairman and CEO Gerard Barron said Mallon's experience in "delivering complex offshore projects and overseeing major capital investment" would strengthen board oversight of execution, capital allocation, and risk.
Concurrent with Mallon's appointment, board member Brendan May stepped down after approximately two years of service.
The board change follows regulatory activity related to TMC's subsidiary, The Metals Company USA LLC. In August 2026, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration published TMC USA's consolidated application for an exploration license and commercial recovery permit over the USA-A area in the Federal Register. NOAA also published a Notice of Intent to develop an Environmental Impact Statement for TMC USA's exploration license application over the USA-B area. Both actions are part of NOAA's ongoing review process under the U.S. Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act of 1980.
