NAVER CEO Choi Soo-yeon joins UN Global Compact board
NAVER Corporation announced that CEO Choi Soo-yeon has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact for a three-year term. The appointment was announced September 18, according to the company's press release.
Choi becomes the first Korean to serve on the UN Global Compact board in 17 years, according to Lee Dong-Kurn, President of the UN Global Compact Network Korea. She will participate in regular board meetings and key UN Global Compact activities.
The UN Global Compact is a voluntary corporate citizenship initiative with more than 25,000 companies and organizations across 167 countries. Established in July 2000, it focuses on ten principles covering human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption areas.
The organization cited Choi's leadership in international cooperation on AI governance as a factor in her selection. She participated in the AI Action Summit in Paris in February and has led discussions on establishing ethical principles for AI technology development.
"Choi Soo-yeon brings deep expertise on how digital companies can create value and scale globally while upholding principles on responsible and sustainable business," said Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact.
NAVER introduced its AI Safety Framework in June 2024, designed to identify and manage potential risks across AI system development stages. Choi also established NAVER Ventures in Silicon Valley and launched NAVER Impact in 2024.
Choi will attend the UN Global Compact Board meeting at UN Headquarters in New York on September 20. Founded in 1999, NAVER operates Korea's largest search engine and recorded sales of KRW 10.74 trillion ($7.5 billion) in 2024.
