Ernexa Therapeutics adds former Schering-Plough CMO to board

Ernexa Therapeutics (NASDAQ: ERNA), a Cambridge, Mass.-based cell therapy developer, has appointed Robert J. Spiegel, M.D., FACP, to its board of directors, according to a company statement.

Dr. Spiegel spent more than 25 years at Schering-Plough Research Institute, serving as its Chief Medical Officer from 1998 to 2009. He later held the same role at PTC Therapeutics from 2014 to 2016. He is currently founder and principal of Spiegel Consulting LLC and an associate professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.

During his time at Schering-Plough, Dr. Spiegel was involved in the development and regulatory approval of multiple therapies, including alpha-interferon and temozolomide for glioblastoma. He participated in more than 30 successful New Drug Applications. He currently serves on the boards of Geron Corporation, Ayala Pharmaceuticals, RenovoRx, and Sun Pharma Advanced Research Corporation.

Dr. Spiegel earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and his B.A., cum laude, from Yale University. He completed his medical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Ernexa's lead candidate, ERNA-101, is a cell therapy designed to activate the immune system to target cancer cells. The company is focused on ovarian cancer as its initial indication. Ernexa's platform uses induced pluripotent stem cells engineered into induced mesenchymal stem cells, intended as an off-the-shelf treatment that does not require patient-specific cell harvesting. The company said it is continuing to advance ERNA-101 toward clinical evaluation.
