Athena Gold Corporation (CSE: ATHA) (OTCQB: AHNRF) has appointed Fred Leigh to its board of directors, effective immediately, according to a press release statement. Concurrently, Brian Power has resigned from the board and will transition to a consulting role with the company.

Leigh has worked in the resource sector for nearly 40 years, serving as a founder, director, and investor in multiple public companies. He is also the founder and president of VC7K Capital Inc., a privately held firm that has invested in early-stage resource sector opportunities for more than 35 years.

Koby Kushner, president and CEO of Athena, noted in the release that Leigh was a founding investor in the group that structured the acquisition of the Golden Bear Mine by Wheaton River Minerals, which later became Wheaton Precious Metals. Kushner also cited Leigh's early investment in Hathor Exploration, acquired by Rio Tinto for approximately C$650 million in 2011, and Blue Pearl Mining, which acquired Thompson Creek Metals for US$575 million in 2006. Leigh was also an early director of Great Bear Resources prior to its acquisition by Kinross Gold for C$1.8 billion in 2022.

Separately, the company announced the grant of 2,000,000 stock options to directors, officers, and consultants at an exercise price of $0.34 per common share, under its 2026 Stock Option Plan. The options vest immediately, expire in ten years, and are subject to approval by the Canadian Securities Exchange. A statutory hold period of four months applies to the options and any shares issued upon exercise.
