onsemi (NASDAQ: ON) announced a collaboration agreement with GlobalFoundries (NASDAQ: GFS) to develop and manufacture gallium nitride power devices using GlobalFoundries' 200mm eMode GaN-on-silicon process technology, starting with 650V products.
The partnership will combine GlobalFoundries' manufacturing process with onsemi's silicon drivers, controllers, and thermally enhanced packaging to produce power devices for AI data centers, automotive, industrial, and aerospace applications.
"This collaboration brings together onsemi's system and product expertise with GlobalFoundries' advanced GaN process to deliver new 650V power devices for high-growth markets," said Dinesh Ramanathan, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at onsemi.
The companies plan to target applications including power supplies, DC-DC converters, onboard chargers, solar microinverters, energy storage systems, and motor drives. The collaboration aims to produce devices with higher power density and efficiency compared to traditional silicon-based solutions.
Mike Hogan, Chief Business Officer at GlobalFoundries, stated the partnership will advance solutions for data centers, automotive, industrial, aerospace and defense markets while building supply chain resilience through U.S.-based manufacturing.
The GaN devices will operate at higher switching frequencies and include bidirectional capabilities, potentially replacing multiple traditional transistors in some applications. onsemi plans to begin customer sampling in the first half of 2026, according to the press release.
This collaboration expands onsemi's semiconductor portfolio to include various GaN technologies across voltage ranges. The companies did not disclose financial terms of the agreement.
