bioAffinity Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: BIAF) released a case study showing how its CyPath Lung diagnostic test helped avoid an invasive biopsy procedure for a 79-year-old patient with a suspicious lung nodule.
The patient, a smoker with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease, underwent low-dose computed tomography screening in June 2025. The scan revealed a spiculated nodule approximately half an inch in size in the right lung. Spiculated nodules typically raise malignancy concerns due to their irregular appearance.
The CyPath Lung test returned a negative result, indicating unlikely malignancy and supporting a surveillance approach rather than immediate biopsy. A follow-up scan in October 2025 showed the suspicious finding had resolved with no pulmonary nodules present.
"Given this patient's age, smoking history and comorbidities, we were not comfortable proceeding directly to an invasive procedure," said Dr. Daya Nadarajah, the patient's pulmonologist. "CyPath Lung gives us objective data to better stratify risk and avoid putting our patients through unnecessary and potentially risky procedures."
The noninvasive test uses flow cytometry and artificial intelligence to identify cell populations in patient sputum that indicate malignancy. Clinical study results demonstrated 92% sensitivity, 87% specificity and 88% accuracy in detecting lung cancer in patients with small indeterminate lung nodules less than 20 millimeters.
CyPath Lung is marketed as a Laboratory Developed Test by Precision Pathology Laboratory Services, a bioAffinity Technologies subsidiary. The test incorporates a fluorescent porphyrin preferentially taken up by cancer and cancer-related cells.
The information is based on a company press release.
