Investing.com -- The Trump administration is preparing to attack military installations inside Venezuela, targeting facilities used by the Soles drug cartel allegedly led by President Nicolás Maduro, according to the Miami Herald, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The planned strikes, which could occur within days or even hours, aim to dismantle key infrastructure used by the cartel and potentially target its leadership hierarchy.

U.S. officials believe the cartel exports approximately 500 tons of cocaine annually, divided between European and American markets.

While sources did not confirm whether Maduro himself is a direct target of the planned military action, one source indicated the Venezuelan leader’s options may be narrowing.

"Maduro is about to find himself trapped and might soon discover that he cannot flee the country even if he decided to," the source said. "What’s worse for him, there is now more than one general willing to capture and hand him over, fully aware that one thing is to talk about death, and another to see it coming."

The operation represents an escalation in U.S. efforts against the Soles cartel, which the Trump administration claims is operated by top members of Maduro’s government.
