Sunrun Inc. (NASDAQ: RUN) and NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE: NRG) announced a multi-year partnership to deploy distributed energy systems in Texas, according to a press release from the companies.
The collaboration will offer Texas residents solar-plus-storage systems paired with rate plans through NRG's retail electricity provider, Reliant. The partnership aims to aggregate distributed power assets to provide electricity to the state's grid during peak demand periods.
Under the arrangement, Sunrun will receive payment for aggregating capacity, while participating Reliant customers will be compensated for sharing stored solar energy. The cumulative capacity from enrolled customers will be available to help meet demand in the ERCOT market.
"This partnership is a major step in achieving our goal of creating a 1 GW virtual power plant by 2035," said Brad Bentley, Executive Vice President and President of NRG Consumer.
Sunrun CEO Mary Powell stated the partnership "demonstrates the scale and strength of Sunrun's storage and solar distributed power plant assets."
The companies plan to develop programs that dispatch these distributed energy resources to supply power during periods of high electricity demand. New and existing Sunrun customers can enroll with Reliant to participate in the program.
NRG Energy is a Fortune 500 company that provides natural gas, electricity and smart home solutions across North America. Sunrun describes itself as America's largest provider of home battery storage and solar systems.
