ODU partners with Google to launch AI-powered university incubator

Old Dominion University announced the creation of MonarchSphere, an artificial intelligence incubator developed in partnership with Google Public Sector. The initiative integrates AI across the university's research, teaching, and operational systems.

The incubator utilizes Google Cloud's AI portfolio, including the Vertex AI platform and Gemini models. MonarchSphere serves as a centralized innovation hub designed to connect ODU's academic, research, and operational environments through a digital intelligence system.

"This partnership with Google Public Sector marks a defining moment for Old Dominion University," said Dr. Brian O. Hemphill, President of Old Dominion University, according to the university's announcement.

The collaboration focuses on several operational areas. Research capabilities have been enhanced through Google Cloud's computational resources, with genomic AI research training time reduced from 24-40 days to 2-3 days, representing a 12-16x improvement over on-premise systems.

ODU joined Google's AI for Education Accelerator program, providing access to Google Career Certificates and AI training resources. The university is integrating these learning opportunities across its curriculum and faculty development programs.

Student services will incorporate Google Cloud tools for course mapping and career pathway identification. The university is developing an AI-powered transcript evaluation tool to assist with academic advising for new and transfer students.

Faculty are piloting Google Colab Enterprise in advanced AI courses, giving students access to GPU resources for training deep learning models. Course development has been streamlined using Google Cloud tools, including Gemini Pro and Notebook LM, reducing material creation time from weeks to minutes.

The incubator extends beyond campus operations to serve Virginia communities. Local municipalities and small businesses will have access to AI tools for business operations through the program.

MonarchSphere represents ODU's approach to creating what the university describes as an integrated ecosystem for AI innovation and workforce development.
