Nutriband Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRB) filed a provisional patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to strengthen intellectual property protection for its AVERSA abuse deterrent transdermal technology, the company announced.
The provisional patent application covers improved aversive formulations and coating application methods designed to enhance the abuse deterrent properties of the AVERSA technology. The company stated that conversion to a non-provisional patent application and subsequent patent grant could extend patent protection for products utilizing the technology, as U.S. patents have a 20-year term from the non-provisional filing date.
AVERSA technology incorporates aversive agents into transdermal patches to prevent abuse, diversion, misuse, and accidental exposure of drugs with abuse potential, including opioids and stimulants. The technology uses a proprietary aversive agent coating that employs taste aversion to deter oral abuse and reduce accidental exposure.
The company's existing AVERSA technology is protected by patents issued in 46 countries, including the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, Russia, China, Canada, Mexico, and Australia.
Nutriband develops transdermal pharmaceutical products, with its lead product being an abuse-deterrent fentanyl patch incorporating AVERSA technology. The Orlando, Florida-based company focuses on developing products that could improve the safety profile of transdermal drugs susceptible to abuse while maintaining access for patients who require them.
