Nokia, LMT partner on 5G tactical defense system for Baltics
Nokia and Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) announced a strategic agreement to develop a 5G tactical communications solution for Baltic defense applications. The partnership combines Nokia's 5G radio technology with LMT's defense expertise to create a secure, high-capacity communications system for military operations in the region.
The integrated system will enable real-time data exchange among unmanned vehicles, sensors, and military teams, according to the companies' joint statement. The solution aims to enhance situational awareness and provide secure interoperability for coalition forces.
"This partnership builds on our longstanding collaboration and shared commitment to advancing 5G capabilities for defense," said Juris Binde, President of LMT. "Together with Nokia, we are enhancing the security, resilience, and operational readiness of national and allied forces."
Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense at Nokia, stated that tactical defense systems utilize 5G networks' high speed, low latency, and connectivity to support real-time battlefield operations. The joint solution supports military capability modernization and enables integration of advanced technologies across tactical environments.
LMT operates Europe's first 5G military testbed at the Ādaži base in Latvia, a NATO site. The company has previously collaborated with Nokia to develop a portable 5G tactical network using Nokia's Banshee platform. LMT serves as Latvia's largest mobile operator and works with the Latvian Ministry of Defence on military connectivity solutions.
The companies have maintained a partnership in Latvia's mobile networks and have been developing 5G-based military applications for defense along NATO's eastern flank.
