NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) announced the development of an AI-native wireless stack for 6G networks in collaboration with Booz Allen, Cisco, MITRE, ODC and T-Mobile. The system was built at NVIDIA's Santa Clara, California campus six months after starting the AI-WIN project.
The wireless stack integrates NVIDIA's AI Aerial platform with 5G RAN software from ODC, user plane function and 5G core software from Cisco, and specialized 6G applications from MITRE and Booz Allen. The partners completed the first user-to-user phone call over the network during development.
The collaboration produced two applications for 6G networks. NVIDIA and Booz Allen developed a multimodal integrated sensing and communications application that combines camera vision with radio-frequency sensing for object detection and tracking. MITRE created an AI-powered spectrum agility application that manages wireless spectrum allocation in real time.
"6G is being built from the ground up with AI at its core — unlocking extreme spectral efficiency, massive connectivity and breakthrough applications," said Ronnie Vasishta, senior vice president of telecom at NVIDIA.
Cerberus ODC's software-defined 5G RAN system, powered by NVIDIA AI Aerial, reportedly delivers 7x greater cell capacity and 3.5x higher power efficiency compared to legacy RAN systems. The system enables simultaneous RAN and AI workloads for enterprise applications.
Booz Allen showcased its R.AI.DIO application at NVIDIA GTC Washington D.C., which detects and classifies interference including signal jammers and unauthorized network users. MITRE's spectrum agility application uses AI to block specific affected frequencies rather than shutting down entire network bands when interference occurs.
The NVIDIA Aerial Framework provides modular pipelines for integrating third-party applications into the AI-RAN stack, with programming interfaces that enable access to real-time physical-layer data for AI model training.
