The Maryland Department of Information Technology and Google Public Sector announced that 43,000 Maryland state employees now have access to Gemini within Google Workspace across 59 state agencies.
According to the announcement, 12,500 state employees are currently active users of the AI tools, representing 30% of Maryland's state workforce. The Gemini integration came at no additional cost to agencies already using Google Workspace.
State agencies are using the Google Workspace tools to create website wireframes, build chatbots for document queries, analyze data sentiment, and generate presentation talking points. The system offers capabilities for drafting communications, data analysis, information retrieval, and brainstorming tasks.
"Generative AI has tremendous potential to help our workforce accomplish repetitive tasks in less time, giving them more time to serve Marylanders," said DoIT Secretary Katie Savage in the statement.
The deployment operates under Maryland's Responsible Use Policy for AI systems. Governor Wes Moore's AI Subcabinet leads the state's approach to AI experimentation in government operations.
Matthew Schneider, Managing Director for U.S. Education, State & Local Government at Google Public Sector, said the adoption demonstrates Maryland's commitment to public sector innovation.
The implementation spans the Moore Miller administration and aims to increase productivity while maintaining privacy, security, and ethical standards for AI use in state government operations.
