Longeveron receives Japan patent for stem cell potency testing methods

Longeveron Inc. (NASDAQ: LGVN) announced the Japan Patent Office granted the company a patent covering potency assay methods for assessing human mesenchymal stem cells derived from various sources including bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord.

Japan Patent No. 2022-563984, titled "Potency Assay," provides Longeveron with patent rights in Japan through April 20, 2041, assuming all annuity fees are paid. The patent covers methods for testing stem cells derived from bone marrow, adipose tissue, peripheral blood, lung, heart, amniotic fluid, inner organs, amniotic membrane, umbilical cord, placenta, or differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells.

The patent issuance brings Longeveron's global intellectual property portfolio to 33 issued patents, according to Dr. Joshua M. Hare, Executive Chairman and Chief Science Officer.

Longeveron is developing laromestrocel, a mesenchymal stem cell therapy that has completed clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease, aging-related frailty, and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The company is currently conducting a Phase 2b clinical trial evaluating laromestrocel in Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, with results expected in the third quarter of 2026.

The Miami-based clinical stage biotechnology company focuses on developing cellular therapy for rare pediatric and chronic aging-related conditions. Laromestrocel has received five FDA designations across its development programs, including Orphan Drug designation, Fast Track designation, and Rare Pediatric Disease designation for the HLHS program.
