The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) and Instacart (NASDAQ: CART) announced an expanded partnership that makes Instacart the primary delivery fulfillment partner across Kroger's digital properties, including Kroger.com and the Kroger mobile app.
The partnership will introduce AI-powered shopping features to customers. Kroger will become one of the first retailers to offer Instacart's AI Assistant, called Cart Assistant, through the Kroger iOS mobile app. The tool helps customers find meal inspiration, build shopping carts, and plan meals through a conversational interface.
The companies are expanding Express Delivery service on Kroger.com, offering delivery in as fast as 30 minutes to more customers. Instacart currently provides fulfillment from nearly 2,700 Kroger stores across more than 20 banners nationwide.
"Agentic shopping has the potential to change the way American families shop and eat," said Yael Cosset, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer for Kroger. "Interacting with an AI agent makes shopping and meal planning as simple as a conversation."
Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart, stated that Kroger "doubled down on Instacart as their primary fulfillment and delivery provider across all Kroger's digital properties" because the company enables "consistent, fast, and high-quality grocery delivery at scale."
The partnership, which began in 2017, has previously launched services including nationwide delivery, Express Delivery, and AI-powered Caper Carts. The expanded relationship also creates new opportunities for consumer packaged goods companies to reach customers through retail media options.
