Investing.com -- Google’s AI talent hemorrhage is worsening. Two senior artificial intelligence researchers from Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) are leaving the tech giant to join rival startup Anthropic PBC, according to a report Wednesday from Bloomberg News, citing people familiar with the matter.
Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel—both viewed internally as critical architects behind Google’s flagship Gemini AI model—are jumping ship to the maker of Claude, the sources said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Adler’s departure strips Google of a key leader in its high-stakes AI coding projects, while Pritzel’s exit removes a core specialist from its foundational system-training teams.
The defections hit Alphabet at a vulnerable moment. Though an early pioneer in the field, Google spent the bulk of the generative AI boom playing catch-up to OpenAI and Anthropic, only recently finding its footing with advanced new models and custom silicon. But momentum is fragile: the news follows a brutal week of high-profile losses for Google, including Nobel laureate John Jumper’s move to Anthropic and legendary researcher Noam Shazeer’s defection to OpenAI.
For investors, the escalating talent war is raising a critical question: Can Google actually hold the line in the race for AI supremacy?
