Life insurance technology company Ethos announced the appointment of William J. Wheeler to its board of directors. Wheeler brings more than 30 years of financial services leadership experience to the Austin-based company.

Wheeler most recently served as Vice Chairman of Athene Holding Ltd. (NYSE: ATH-PA), a retirement services company and subsidiary of Apollo Global Management, after serving seven years as Athene's President. He previously held positions as President of the Americas for MetLife, overseeing insurance and retirement business across the United States and Latin America, and served as MetLife's Chief Financial Officer.

Wheeler currently serves as a director of Evercore Inc. (NYSE: EVR), where he chairs the Audit Committee and serves on the Compensation Committee. He previously served on boards of directors for Athora Holding Ltd. and Venerable Holdings Inc., both private insurance companies, and has served on the American Council of Life Insurers.

"I'm excited to join an organization which I believe will have a significant impact on how people obtain life insurance and other financial services," Wheeler said in a statement.

Wheeler joins a board that includes Ethos co-founders Peter Colis and Lingke Wang, along with representatives from Sequoia Capital, Accel, Guidewire Software, Twilio, and former PayPal executive John Kunze.

Ethos uses technology and data analytics to streamline the life insurance application process, allowing customers to apply for coverage through a digital application with health questions that provides decisions within minutes without medical examinations. The company states it issues billions in coverage each month.

Wheeler holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College, where he serves as Chairman of the board of trustees, and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
