EA partners with Stability AI to develop content creation tools
Electronic Arts announced a partnership with Stability AI to co-develop artificial intelligence models, tools, and workflows for content creation in game development. The collaboration aims to support EA's artists, designers, and developers in creating game assets and environments.
The partnership will initially focus on accelerating the creation of Physically Based Rendering materials through new artist-driven workflows. These tools will generate 2D textures that maintain color and light accuracy across different virtual environments, from football jerseys under stadium lights to furniture in various lighting conditions.
"Creativity has always been at the heart of everything our teams do," said Kallol Mitra, VP of Creative Innovation at EA. "Together with Stability AI, we're amplifying that creativity. Giving artists, designers, and developers the power to dream bigger and build more."
The companies plan to develop AI systems that can pre-visualize entire 3D environments from prompts, allowing artists to direct the generation of game content. This technology builds on EA's existing machine learning applications, including HeadStart, which creates in-game character likenesses from photographs.
Steve Kestell, Head of Technical Art for EA SPORTS, described the partnership's tools as "smarter paintbrushes" that will allow creativity to transfer directly from developers' minds into gaming experiences.
Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI, said the partnership will embed the company's 3D research team directly with EA's development teams. "By embedding our 3D research team directly with EA's artists and developers we'll unlock the next level in world-building power," Akkaraju stated.
The collaboration represents EA's continued integration of AI and machine learning technologies, which the company has used for gameplay mechanics, animation, physics simulation, and development processes for several years.
