Duracell has opened a $56 million Global Innovation Center for Research and Development at Science Square Labs in Atlanta, according to a company press release. The 83,000-square-foot facility is located at 101 Nerem Street NW in Atlanta's West Midtown, adjacent to Georgia Tech.

The center is expected to create 120 jobs and will serve as the company's central hub for battery technology research and development. Representatives from the State of Georgia, the City of Atlanta, and Georgia Tech attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening.

"Georgia has been a vital home for Duracell for decades, and expanding our footprint into Science Square was a natural next step in that partnership," said Roberto Mendez, Chief Executive Officer at Duracell.

The facility was developed by Trammell Crow Company in partnership with Georgia Advanced Technology Ventures, a Georgia Tech affiliate. Partners Real Estate represented Duracell in the transaction, while CBRE represented Trammell Crow Company. The design and construction team included Perkins&Will, AHA Consulting Engineers, Walter P Moore, and Brasfield & Gorrie.

Duracell said the center will connect its existing LaGrange manufacturing plant and Fairburn distribution center into a statewide network. The company said it intends to recruit talent from Georgia Tech and neighboring research institutions.

Duracell is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK.A, BRK.B), which acquired the brand in 2016.
