Dow Jones Special Committee elects John Tefft to replace retiring member
The Dow Jones Special Committee has elected John F. Tefft to succeed Anne W. Patterson, who retired after seven years of service on the independent oversight body.
Tefft will complete Patterson's term ending December 31, 2027, and would be eligible for reelection to a five-year term thereafter, according to a company statement.
The retired diplomat served as U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2014 to 2017 and previously held ambassador positions in Lithuania, Georgia and Ukraine. After initially retiring from the Foreign Service in 2013, Tefft worked as executive director of RAND Corp.'s U.S.-Russia Business Leaders Forum before returning to government service in Moscow. He currently serves as a Senior Fellow at RAND Corp.
In October 2023, Tefft received the American Foreign Service Association's Lifetime Contributions to American Diplomacy award. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from Marquette University and a master's degree in history from Georgetown University.
The five-person Special Committee operates as an independent body responsible for safeguarding the editorial independence of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones while monitoring adherence to ethical and professional standards. The committee was established as part of News Corp's acquisition of Dow Jones & Co. in late 2007.
The committee must approve appointments of the Journal's Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Page Editor under an agreement between Dow Jones' former owners and News Corp.
Other committee members include chair Thomas J. Bray, secretary Lou Boccardi, Cynthia Glassman and Larry Ingrassia.
