Digi International Inc. (NASDAQ: DGII) announced the upcoming availability of its Digi XBee for Wi-SUN solution, developed in partnership with Silicon Labs Inc. (NASDAQ: SLAB). The solution targets smart city, utility, renewable energy, and industrial IoT applications.
The Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network) technology creates IPv6-based sub-GHz mesh networks built on IEEE 802.15.4g standards. According to the press release, over 100 million Wi-SUN devices have been deployed globally in mission-critical applications.
The Digi XBee for Wi-SUN solution includes three components: modules built on Silicon Labs' EFR32 platform with MicroPython edge processing capabilities, Digi XBee Hive Border Routers that serve as network gateways with LTE, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet connectivity, and network management tools including Digi Remote Manager for cloud-based device management and Digi XBee Studio for local development.
The technology supports data rates from 50 kbps to 2.4 Mbps and accommodates both battery-operated and powered infrastructure nodes. The solution incorporates Digi TrustFence security features and Silicon Labs' PSA Level 3-certified Secure Vault High technology.
"Solutions like Digi XBee for Wi-SUN are essential in making the advanced capabilities of Wi-SUN broadly accessible," said Rob Shane, Vice President of Mass Market Sales and Applications at Silicon Labs. "They reduce product development complexity, while allowing customers to focus on delivering innovation in real-world applications."
The solution will undergo Wi-SUN CERTIFIED program certification to ensure compatibility with existing Wi-SUN networks. Digi also announced support for Cisco OpenCSMP, which may enable integration with utility Wi-SUN networks.
The Wi-SUN Alliance, which governs the technology standard, includes over 300 members. Digi International, founded in 1985, provides IoT connectivity solutions and reports having connected more than 100 million devices.
