Cybersecurity stocks drop as Anthropic launches Claude Code Security tool

Investing.com -- Cloud-native security stalwarts faced a sharp sell-off Friday as Anthropic PBC unveiled a tool capable of autonomously finding and patching software vulnerabilities. Shares of CrowdStrike Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: CRWD) and Okta Inc (NASDAQ: OKTA) plummeted 6.8% and 9.2%, respectively, as investors weighed the risk of AI agents cannibalizing the market for traditional threat detection.

The decline followed the limited research preview of Claude Code Security, a feature designed to scan codebases for subtle logic flaws that manual reviewers often overlook. "Claude Code Security is intended to put this power squarely in the hands of defenders and protect code against this new category of AI-enabled attack," the company stated in its release.

Market participants expressed concern that Anthropic’s ability to find "bugs that had gone undetected for decades" could diminish the long-term value of existing enterprise security suites. Cloudflare Inc (NYSE: NET) shares dropped 6.7%, while Sailpoint Inc (NASDAQ: SAIL) fell 9.1% amid fears that AI-native tools are shifting security from reactive monitoring to proactive, automated repair.

Anthropic emphasized that its model, Claude Opus 4.6, has already identified over 500 vulnerabilities in production open-source codebases during internal stress testing. The company noted that "every finding goes through a multi-stage verification process before it reaches an analyst" to ensure high-fidelity results and minimize false positives.

The sell-off mirrors recent volatility across the software sector as generative AI moves from an experimental feature to a core functional layer of the enterprise. "We expect that a significant share of the world’s code will be scanned by AI in the near future," the San Francisco-based AI firm predicted regarding the industry's trajectory.

While traditional vendors like Zscaler Inc (NASDAQ: ZS), down 3.5%, have integrated AI into their platforms, the emergence of agentic tools represents a fundamental shift in the competitive landscape.

The sell-off mirrors recent volatility across the software sector as generative AI moves from an experimental feature to a core functional layer of the enterprise. Investors have recently punished legal software providers and education firms when AI-driven alternatives threatened their core subscription models.
