Compass Pathways plc (NASDAQ: CMPS) appointed Justin Gover to its board of directors, effective immediately, according to a company statement. Gover brings more than 25 years of leadership experience in the biopharmaceutical industry to the biotechnology company focused on mental health treatments.
As part of the board transition, Dr. Linda McGoldrick will retire from her position at the end of October after more than five years of service. McGoldrick helped guide the company through its 2020 initial public offering and early clinical milestones.
Gover served as founding chief executive officer of GW Pharmaceuticals plc from its inception in 1999 through its $7 billion acquisition by Jazz Pharmaceuticals in 2021. During his tenure, GW achieved FDA approval of Epidiolex, described as the first plant-derived cannabinoid medicine, and built global operations spanning research and development, manufacturing, and commercial activities.
The appointment comes after Compass achieved the primary endpoint in its first Phase 3 trial for COMP360, its investigational synthetic psilocybin treatment for treatment-resistant depression. The company has received Breakthrough Therapy designation from the FDA and Innovative Licensing and Access Pathway designation in the UK for this treatment.
Gover currently serves on the board of Xenon Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: XENE) and is involved with nonprofit organizations including the Rady Children's Hospital Institute for Genomic Medicine and CURE Epilepsy.
Compass Pathways is headquartered in London with offices in New York. The company is developing treatments for mental health conditions, with COMP360 potentially representing a first-in-class treatment for treatment-resistant depression.
