Can-Fite receives Japanese patent allowance for Namodenoson obesity use

Can-Fite BioPharma Ltd. (NYSE American: CANF) announced that the Japan Patent Office has allowed Japanese Patent Application No. 2025-049941, a divisional application covering the use of A3 adenosine receptor agonists, including its drug candidate Namodenoson, for inducing fat loss and treating obesity and related metabolic disorders.

The company states it has previously secured patent protection for this technology in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Israel. The Japanese allowance adds to that portfolio in a market the company describes as one of the world's largest for pharmaceuticals.

Namodenoson is an oral drug candidate that selectively targets the A3 adenosine receptor. The company says preclinical and clinical findings suggest it may reduce fat accumulation while improving metabolic parameters. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 trial for advanced liver cancer, a Phase 2b trial for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, and a Phase 2a study in pancreatic cancer.

Research on Namodenoson's anti-obesity activity was published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Obesity, according to the company.
